Archival Finding Aids

Department: Independent Agency
Agency: Library of Congress (LOC) (http://www.loc.gov/index.html )
Sub Agency: Librarians and Archivists (http://www.loc.gov/library/ )
Description:
Archival Finding Aids (http://www.loc.gov/rr/ead/ ) provide a comprehensive overview of a collection's scope and contents. They define the conditions under which a collection may be accessed or copied, explain its provenance, and contain histories of individuals and organizations connected with the collection. Archival finding aids progressively describe a collection's component parts. Corresponding identifiers (such as call numbers or container numbers) help researchers request items of interest.

Finding Aids are available by the repository or custodial division in which the collections may be used. The repository or custodial divisions at the LOC include American Folklife Center; Geography and Map Division; Manuscript Division; Motion Picture Section; Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division; Music Division; Prints and Photographs Division; Rare Book and Special Collections Division; Science, Technology and Business Division.
